UMass Lowell Navitas Global Student Success Program

Academic English (Full Time)

The Academic English (AE) program is designed for students who have not met the English language requirements for the UMass Lowell Navitas Global Student Success Program (GSSP). 

AE is undertaken on a semesterly basis and consists of 20 hours of class per week. During AE students will focus on developing consistent competency, confidence, and effectiveness in listening, speaking, pronunciation and grammar/vocabulary skills, while reading, speaking and writing in English to meet college level entrance requirements.

Program objectives:

  • development of critical thought and analysis

  • speak confidently and effectively using idiomatic and complex speech

  • communicate using non-verbal language

  • demonstrate competency in a variety of social and everyday conversational situations and consistently use correct rhythms and intonation of standard American English

  • identify and work on individual pronunciation problems

  • develop speaking confidence through oral presentations

  • demonstrate reading comprehension skills using reading techniques

  • develop confidence in all verb tenses

  • develop paraphrasing and summarizing skills

  • use transitions between paragraphs

  • develop ideas into well-configured descriptive paragraphs and essays

  • development of critical thought and analysis


Minimum English requirements:

  • IELTS: 4.5 (no band lower than 4.0)

  • TOEFL iBT: 55

  • Duolingo English Test: 65 (Undergraduate) and 85 (Graduate)
  • Pearson Versant English Placement Test: 38
